COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

This position is opened up to be a seasonal OR a full time position . For a full time position, it will be for a one year period from March 2019 to March 2020- 53 weeks) with the possibility of it being extended to another year. For a seasonal position, the funding available will be for two seasons( 26 weeks each year x 2 years) with the possibility of it being extended. The start and end date of the seasonal position will be determined by MICG.
The Makkovik Inuit Community Government is accepting applications for a Community Economic Development Officer for Makkovik.
The Community Economic Development Officer is responsible for facilitating, promoting and ensuring community and economic development as well as the tourism industry in order to increase local employment and secure opportunities for economic and business, tourism development.
The Community Economic Development Officer (CDO) will be responsible for:
Conducting public consultations and hold meetings with Makkovik Inuit Government, Nunatsiavut, community groups, businesses and local artisans to development an Economic Development Work Plan.
Assemble an Economic Development Work Plan identifying economic development initiatives that includes vision, goals, champions, timelines, and objectives.
Update and submit monthly reports to Council on the progress of items listed in the Economic Development Work Plan.
Submit quarterly and final annual report to Nunatsiavut Government
Establish and support economic development sub-committee (i.e. Cruise Ship Committee, Arena Fundraising Committee).
Promote the community and culture by updating community profile, business and artisan directory, website; develop brochures and promotional material, dressing in traditional clothing.
Take minutes at meetings and maintain economic development committee files and reports
Research and provide recommendations relating to the economic development initiatives.
Evaluate results of economic development studies and agreements and make recommendations.
Provide guidance and advice to community groups, businesses and local artisans on economic development opportunities.
Draft funding proposals for approval by Makkovik Inuit Community Government and community groups; submit funding proposals to various organizations has approved.
Participate in meetings and conferences as it relates to Community Economic Development and training as approved by Makkovik Inuit Community Government.
Assist with the development of job creation projects
Identify community training, workshops, and development requirements to take advantage of economic development opportunities.
Develop a good working relationship with Government Agencies/Funding Agencies, etc.
Work closely with Nunatsiavut Departments on regional initiatives as approved by Makkovik Inuit Community Government.
Follow and promote the policies of the Makkovik Inuit Community Government
The successful candidates will work under the supervision of the Makkovik Inuit Community Council.
Qualifications:
Graduation from a recognized program in business, commerce or related discipline.
A knowledge of and/or experience in the field of Economic Development and a understanding of the zonal board structure.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of proposal writing and computers (Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Internet).
Candidates must be able to work both independently and as a regional team.
The above qualifications would normally be acquired through a Degree in Business Administration and/or progressively related experience, however, equivalent combination of experience and training will be considered.
