James R. Andersen Sr. Photos
At the Community Hall you can see 29 photos framed, from Uncle Jim's huge collection. Since the 1930's Uncle Jim (1919-2011) has been taking pictures of everyone, everything, and every event in Makkovik! His collection caught the attention of archivist Sam Kula in 2003. He had seen many family collections before, but this was different. It was not just tied to one family but the whole community. The collection was purchased by the Labrador Inuit Association in 2002, and housed for protection at the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (The Rooms). Since that time, the photos have been the subject of a CBC Land and Sea program; a photo exhibit that travelled the province; a DVD and book entitled "James Andersen, Over 50 Years of Taking Pictures". (The DVD and book are available for sale in Makkovik.) In 2009, Uncle Jim was presented with the Rogers Arts Achievement Award, at The Rooms in St. John's.
In addition to being a great photographer, Uncle Jim was a very good story teller. Below is a series of interviews with the late Uncle Jim Andersen recorded by Joan Andersen in 2010.
